Your Itinerary In Detail

Day 1 | Travel To Bwindi National park For Gorilla Trekking

Early Morning Pickup

Your day starts very early. At 6:00 am, your professional driver-guide will pick you up from your hotel or place of stay in Kisoro, Kabale, or Lake Bunyonyi. You will travel in a comfortable safari vehicle. The drive to Bwindi takes you through quiet villages, rolling hills, and green farmland. As the sun rises, you will enjoy cool air and beautiful views. You will arrive at the park headquarters in time for the morning briefing.

Gorilla Trekking Briefing

At the briefing point, you will meet park rangers and guides from the Uganda Wildlife Authority. They will explain the rules and safety guidelines for gorilla trekking. You will learn how to behave near gorillas, how long you are allowed to stay with them, and what to expect during the trek. Groups are kept small to protect the gorillas and their habitat. At 8:00 am, you will start the trek into the forest.

Trekking Through the Forest

The gorilla trek takes you deep into Bwindi’s dense rainforest. The trails can be narrow, muddy, and steep. The forest is often cool and damp.

The length of the trek varies. It can take 45 minutes to 7 hours, depending on where the gorillas are located that day. Rangers track the gorillas every day, but they still move freely.

The walk can be tiring, but it is manageable with a steady pace and short breaks. Porters are available to help carry bags and assist on steep sections. As you walk, your guide will point out plants, animal signs, and forest sounds. You may see monkeys jumping through trees or hear birds calling above the canopy.

Meeting the Mountain Gorillas

Booking Gorilla Trekking Permits

When you finally meet the gorillas, the moment is unforgettable. You will spend one full hour with a habituated gorilla family. You may see huge silverbacks, playful juveniles, and gentle mothers caring for their babies.

Watching gorillas eat, groom, and interact is deeply moving. Their expressions feel familiar and emotional. Many travelers describe this moment as life-changing. You are allowed to take photos, but without flash. The experience is calm, quiet, and respectful. This is one of the closest wildlife encounters possible anywhere in the world.

Other Wildlife You May See

While gorillas are the main focus, Bwindi is full of other wildlife. During the trek, you may also see Black-fronted duiker, Yellow-backed duiker, Guereza colobus monkeys, L’Hoest’s monkeys, Blue monkeys, Red-tailed monkeys, Chimpanzees (rare but possible), Forest squirrels such as fire-footed rope squirrel and Ruwenzori sun squirrel. The forest is also rich in birds, insects, and colorful plants.

Gorilla Trekking Certificate

After the trek, you will return to the starting point. Here, you will receive your official gorilla trekking certificate from the Uganda Wildlife Authority. This certificate confirms your participation in gorilla conservation and is a wonderful souvenir of your adventure. You will then enjoy a packed picnic lunch, surrounded by forest scenery.

Return Transfer

After lunch, your driver-guide will transfer you back to Kisoro or Kabale, depending on your travel plans. You will arrive in the afternoon or early evening. Though short, the day will leave you with lasting memories and incredible stories to share.
