Uganda and Zanzibar

In Uganda, we have almost every kind of natural beauty you can imagine. But we have no ocean, no sea. And yet, you can end your tour on the beach. The white sandy beaches of Zanzibar are just around the corner, an hour’s flight away. It is the perfect place to unwind and enjoy a completely different environment before returning home. We would be happy to explain the possibilities of a combined tour of Uganda and Zanzibar.

Zanzibar has a beautiful rich culture

Zanzibar is much more than its blue sea, coral reefs, and beaches. It is an island where many cultures come together in a natural way. Life here feels even more relaxed than in Uganda. It is warmer, and everything moves just a little slower. A large part of the population in Zanzibar is Muslim, and this brings strong Arabic influences into daily life. You see it in the architecture, the traditions, and especially the food. Seafood and fresh fish are a big part of local cuisine. This is something you do not often find in Uganda.

So, if you add Zanzibar to your trip, you are not just visiting a beach destination. You are experiencing two very different worlds in one journey. And that contrast is what makes it so special.

Plenty of things to do on Zanzibar

We plan your trip to Zanzibar with a bit more flexibility. We take care of your accommodation and make sure you stay in a lovely place. But we often keep your itinerary open. Zanzibar is an island where you do not need a fixed plan. You relax, and you decide on the spot what you feel like doing. Nothing is required here. But if you want to explore, there is plenty to enjoy. Here are three simple ideas to get you started:

  • Stone Town. This is the old capital of Zanzibar. It is a beautiful historic city. The architecture is still largely untouched. You feel the history everywhere. It is a real mix of cultures.
  • Spice tour. Zanzibar is famous for its spices. Thanks to its climate and Arabic influence, the island produces cloves, vanilla, cinnamon, and more. A spice farm tour is a fun and easy way to experience this.
  • Out on the water. Zanzibar is made for the sea. You can snorkel in clear water, go kitesurfing, or simply relax on a traditional dhow boat with a cold drink in your hand.

Small, picturesque accommodations

We know every square centimeter of Uganda. And we can say the same about Zanzibar. We know the places we send you to inside and out. In Zanzibar, we work with a number of small-scale resorts. These are places we have visited ourselves and know well. They are right on the beach. They have the right atmosphere. A great location, but not too touristy.

How much does a tour of Uganda cost, ending with Zanzibar?

Finishing your trip in Zanzibar does not make your overall tour significantly more expensive. If you extend your trip by four days to include Zanzibar, or stay four extra days in Uganda, your total cost can even be slightly lower when you include Zanzibar. This is mainly because of the costs in Uganda, such as your tour guide, safari vehicle, and park fees. These are not needed once you are in Zanzibar. For your stay in Zanzibar, we recommend 4 to 6 nights. We do not advise staying less than 4 nights, as it feels too short to truly enjoy the island. Staying longer than 6 nights is also possible, especially if you want to add activities like kitesurfing lessons or simply slow down and relax more.

Because this is a unique combination, it is important to know in advance how everything fits together. Below, we have answered the most frequently asked questions about combining Uganda and Zanzibar. What is fun to do on Zanzibar?

Although many travelers come to Zanzibar to relax, the island offers much more than beautiful beaches.

A visit to Stone Town is almost a must. The narrow streets, historic buildings, local markets, and rich history show a very different side of Zanzibar compared to the beaches it is famous for.

Zanzibar is also a great place for snorkeling and scuba diving. Along the coast, you will find colorful coral reefs with a wide variety of tropical fish. Boat trips on a traditional dhow are also very popular and a great way to experience the ocean.

If you are interested in culture, a visit to a spice plantation is highly recommended. Zanzibar is known as the Spice Island for a reason. On a spice tour, you learn where cloves, cinnamon, vanilla, and many other spices come from.

It is this mix of culture, nature, activities, and relaxation that makes Zanzibar such a special destination.

Yes. Although Zanzibar is by far the most popular beach extension after a tour of Uganda, there are also other beautiful options along the East African coast.

Upon request, we can also look at destinations on the Kenyan coast, such as Diani Beach and Watamu. Both have a very unique character.

Diani Beach is known for its long white sandy beaches, comfortable accommodations, and easy access. Watamu feels smaller and quieter, with excellent snorkeling and diving along the coast.

Still, most travelers eventually choose Zanzibar. Not only for the beaches, but also for its special mix of culture, history, and tropical atmosphere. Because of this, Zanzibar often feels like a destination in its own right, not just a place to relax at the end of a trip.

The best beach extension for you depends on your itinerary, preferences, and budget. That is why we always look at the full picture and recommend what fits your journey best.

On Zanzibar, we mainly work with small-scale boutique hotels and atmospheric accommodations that fit well with the character of our tours in Uganda.

Instead of large all-inclusive resorts, we carefully choose places with character, personal service, and a great location. Places where you truly feel you are on Zanzibar, not just at any random beach destination.

Depending on your preferences, we can arrange a luxury beach stay, a stylish boutique hotel, or a more simple and relaxed accommodation close to local life.

Because every trip is tailor-made, we look beyond just budget and comfort. We also consider the atmosphere that suits you best. This ensures your stay in Zanzibar connects naturally with the rest of your journey and feels like a smooth continuation of your adventure in Uganda.

Yes, Zanzibar is a great destination for families with children. Especially after a tour of Uganda, it offers a relaxed and easy ending to the trip.

Many families enjoy this combination. During the safari part of the journey, children experience adventure with wildlife, game drives, and boat trips. After that, Zanzibar offers time to slow down and enjoy the ocean.

We usually recommend quieter parts of the island, such as the east coast. The atmosphere here is calm and relaxed, and many accommodations are well suited for families. The beaches are wide, the pace is slower, and there is plenty of space to enjoy time together.

You can also shape your Zanzibar stay to match your family’s needs. Some families prefer a few days of beach and pool time. Others like to add light activities such as a visit to Stone Town, a boat trip, or a snorkeling excursion.

It is this balance of adventure and relaxation that makes Uganda and Zanzibar a very memorable trip for families.

Yes, of course. We can organize different activities on Zanzibar, depending on your interests and how you want to spend your beach extension.

Think of snorkeling or diving at colorful coral reefs, a visit to historic Stone Town, a spice tour through the famous plantations, or a boat trip on a traditional dhow across the Indian Ocean. Activities like swimming with dolphins are also possible.

At the same time, we see that many travelers also choose a few days without a fixed plan. After an active safari in Uganda, it can be very nice to simply slow down for a while. A good book, a walk on the beach, and enjoying the quiet are often enough.

That is why we always help you find the right balance. Do you want to actively explore Zanzibar, or mainly use it to relax completely? Both are possible. Most of the time, the best trip is a mix of the two.

Zanzibar is much more than a beach destination. Yes, you will find white sandy beaches, palm trees, and warm waters of the Indian Ocean. But the island also has a unique culture and history that you see everywhere you go.

Because of the mix of African, Arabic, and Indian influences, Zanzibar feels very different from many other tropical islands. You notice it in the architecture, the food, the smell of spices, and the everyday atmosphere in the streets.

Stone Town shows this history clearly. The narrow alleys, old Arabic buildings, local markets, and rich stories give the island a character that goes far beyond sun and sand.

But Zanzibar is not only Stone Town. Outside the city, you find fishing villages, traditional dhow boats, and spice plantations. There is always something small and authentic to discover.

It is this combination of culture, history, and tropical beaches that makes Zanzibar such a special ending to a tour of Uganda. It does not feel like a standard beach holiday. It feels like a destination with its own story.

For most travelers, we choose the east coast of Zanzibar, for example around Paje or Jambiani. This part of the island is known for its long white beaches, clear turquoise water, and relaxed atmosphere.

What we especially like here is that it still feels small-scale. You will not find large hotel complexes. Instead, you find atmospheric boutique hotels and simple, charming places that fit well with the style of a Uganda safari.

The east coast also offers a nice balance between peace and activity. You can take a beach walk at low tide, go snorkeling, visit a local village, or simply relax and enjoy the view of the Indian Ocean.

Of course, we always look at what suits you best. Some travelers want complete peace and quiet. Others prefer a bit more energy or activities nearby. That is why we always choose a location that matches your wishes and fits naturally with the rest of your journey.

For most travelers, we recommend between 3 and 6 nights in Zanzibar. This is usually enough time to truly relax after an active tour of Uganda and let all the impressions settle.

After days of safaris, gorilla trekking, and adventure, it feels good to slow down. A few days by the beach, good food, warm weather, and no early wake-up calls make a big difference.

The ideal length of stay depends on your travel style. If you mainly want to relax, 3 to 4 nights is often enough. If you enjoy activities like diving, snorkeling, kitesurfing, or simply spending more time at the beach, then 5 to 7 nights or even longer works better.

When we design your trip, we always look for the right balance. Zanzibar should feel like a natural and valuable ending to your journey, not just an extra stop. That is why we always tailor our advice to your pace and preferences.

In most cases, you fly from Entebbe International Airport to Zanzibar. Depending on the route and available connections, this can be a direct flight or include a short layover, for example in Nairobi.

When we design your trip, we do not only look at the flight itself. We also look at how it fits into your overall itinerary. After an active tour in Uganda, you do not want long travel days or complicated connections at the end of your journey.

That is why we carefully match the flights to the rhythm of your trip. We make sure the transition from safari and adventure to beach and relaxation feels smooth and easy.

In this way, Zanzibar does not feel like a separate add-on. It feels like a natural continuation and a calm, perfect ending to your Uganda safari.

Yes, absolutely. If you want to combine Uganda with Zanzibar, we arrange the full Zanzibar part of your journey.

We help you design the best itinerary and take care of regional flights, accommodation, transfers, and any activities on the island. This ensures that Uganda and Zanzibar connect smoothly as one trip.

We normally do not book international flights to and from Africa. We prefer to leave this to you, so you have maximum flexibility with your travel dates, airlines, and possible extensions. Of course, we are always happy to advise you on the best flight options.

The result is a seamless journey from start to finish. From gorilla trekking in the rainforest to relaxing days on the beaches of Zanzibar.

The combination of Uganda and Zanzibar brings together two completely different travel experiences. While Uganda revolves around adventure, nature, and wildlife, Zanzibar is known for relaxation, white beaches, and the tropical atmosphere of the Indian Ocean.

During a tour of Uganda, the days are often filled with safaris, gorilla trekking, encounters with chimpanzees, and impressive landscapes. This makes the trip special, but also intense.

That is precisely why many travelers choose to end their trip on Zanzibar. A few days on the beach, a calm sea, good food, and no plans. Just savoring everything you have experienced.

In addition, the combination is practically easy to arrange thanks to the flight connections between East Africa and Zanzibar. As a result, it doesn’t feel like two separate holidays, but like one complete trip with the perfect balance between adventure and relaxation.

Besides Zanzibar, ending your trip on the beach in Kenya is also a good option. We can arrange this for you as well.
