How Much Does a Uganda Safari Cost?

You can make your safari in Uganda as cheap or very expensive as you want. It really depends on how you choose to travel. If we compare Uganda to other popular destinations in East Africa, such as Kenya and Tanzania, it is relatively more budget-friendly. Moreover, it is much more diverse. You get a mix of everything; savannah, rainforest, lakes, and mountains; all in one trip. And the best part? There is no mass tourism here. Uganda is still a relatively undiscovered tourism destination, yet just as beautiful and rewarding to explore.

What You Can Expect in Terms of Safari Costs in Uganda

You can make your safari in Uganda very luxurious and expensive, but you can also do it more cheaply.

It all depends on your travel style.

The safaris we organize usually fall somewhere in between. We focus on great locations, experienced tour guides, safe transport, and high-quality delicious food throughout your tour.

To give you a clear idea, a very complete Uganda safari that includes everything (nice lodges, private transport, a professional tour guide, meals, park fees, etc.) typically ranges between USD 4,000 and USD 6,000 per person. This gives you a smooth and well-organized experience from start to finish.

Your final budget will depend on what you include in your trip. Activities like gorilla trekking add to the cost, as permits are quite expensive. Group size also matters.

Travelling with family or friends helps reduce the cost per person, as you usually share the vehicle, fuel, accommodation, and guide. International flights are not included and should be budgeted separately.

Tips

  • If you want more for the same price, it is smart to come to Uganda during the low season
  • Most luxury safaris lodges use different rates for the high and low seasons. So, if you plan smartly, you can stay at more luxurious accommodation for less.
  • Also, the price of the gorilla trekking permits is discounted from USD 800 to USD 600 during the low season months of April, May and November.
  • Flights are usually more affordable during this time as well, making it a great period to travel.

Uganda is cheaper than other East African destinations

Uganda offers excellent value compared to other safari destinations in East Africa.  You see this in many areas, especially park fees and accommodation.

For example, park entry fees are generally lower than in Rwanda, Tanzania, and Kenya. In Serengeti National Park of Tanzania, entry fee is $70 per 24 hours. In Uganda, fees are lower.

In Queen Elizabeth National Park – the country’s most popular park – you pay USD 40 per 24 hours.

Accommodation in Uganda also offers strong value. Uganda has many high-quality mid-range lodges at reasonable prices. In Kenya or Tanzania, similar properties often cost $50 to $100 more per night.

Aside from Uganda being cheaper, you also get more for your money. Uganda is more diverse. Here, you can enjoy a classic safari, just like in Kenya and Tanzania, but we have much more to offer.

In Uganda, for example, you can track wild mountain gorilla and chimpanzees on foot in dense rainforest jungles. You can go white water rafting on the Nile – the longest river on Earth.

You can cycle around or walk through national parks. We have savannas, rainforest jungles, snow-capped mountains, volcanoes, lakes, and wetland.

Moreover, people of Uganda are very nice people. Ugandans are warm and friendly. Last but not least: there is no mass tourism in Uganda. As a result, it almost feels as if you have the Uganda National Parks entirely to yourself. The experience feels more personal and authentic.

In short: in Uganda, you get more for less money, without compromising on experience.
