Kyambura Gorge Lodge, Queen Elizabeth National Park
Kyambura Gorge Lodge is one of the most striking lodges in Queen Elizabeth National Park in western Uganda. It sits on the edge of the dramatic Kyambura Gorge, known as the “Valley of the Apes.” From the lodge, you look out over open savanna, the shimmering Kazinga Channel, and the distant Rwenzori Mountains, the legendary “Mountains of the Moon.”
The lodge is owned and operated by Volcanoes Safaris, pioneers of luxury eco-lodges in Uganda and Rwanda since 1997. This is their signature property in the region. Refined. Intimate. Location and Getting There
Kyambura Gorge Lodge lies on the edge of Queen Elizabeth National Park, surrounded by gardens, rolling hills, and lush vegetation. The famous Kyambura Gorge is just a short drive away, and wildlife often roams nearby. Getting here is easy.
Most guests arrive at Entebbe International Airport and take a short domestic flight to Kasese Airstrip. From there, it’s about a two-hour drive to the lodge through scenic countryside. You can also travel by road all the way from Entebbe or Kampala, it’s a six to seven-hour journey, but the views of lakes, tea plantations, and rural villages make it a lovely road trip.

Accommodation At Kyambura Gorge Lodge
Kyambura Gorge Lodge has eight luxury bandas (cottages) built from natural materials like timber, stone, and thatch. Each banda is named after one of the chimpanzees living in Kyambura Gorge — a beautiful way to remind guests of the wildlife that makes this area so special.
Inside, the bandas are large and bright, with double or twin beds, soft linens, and mosquito nets. The private verandas look out over either the gorge or the open plains of Queen Elizabeth National Park.
You can sit here with a cup of coffee and listen to the forest come alive in the morning or watch the sun turn the savanna golden in the evening.
Each banda has its own en-suite bathroom with a hot shower, flush toilet, and twin washbasins. There’s plenty of space for storage and a comfortable seating area to relax after a day of exploring. One of the bandas is specially designed for families or honeymooners, with extra privacy and beautiful views.
Facilities At Kyambura Gorge Lodge
The main lodge building is warm and inviting, with a mix of modern style and African design. The lounge has soft sofas and chairs where you can read, relax, or chat with other travelers.
The restaurant serves freshly prepared meals made from local ingredients, while the bar offers a wide selection of drinks to enjoy as you watch the sunset.
You can also visit the gift shop for local crafts, relax in the massage room, or take a dip in the saltwater swimming pool, which overlooks the vast plains and forests below. The pool area is peaceful and scenic — the perfect spot to unwind after a game drive or forest walk.
There is Wi-Fi, charging stations, and laundry service available, but most guests soon forget about technology as they settle into the rhythm of the wilderness.
Activities At Kyambura Gorge Lodge
Kyambura Gorge Lodge is a wonderful base for exploring Queen Elizabeth National Park and the surrounding landscapes. There’s something for everyone — from wildlife safaris and chimpanzee trekking to cultural visits and boat rides.
#1 Game Drives
Go on exciting game drives through Queen Elizabeth National Park and see an amazing variety of wildlife. The park is home to elephants, buffaloes, lions, leopards, hippos, crocodiles, antelopes, and more than 600 species of birds. You might even spot the famous tree-climbing lions in the Ishasha area — a rare and unforgettable sight. Morning and evening drives offer beautiful light for photography and great chances to see animals at their most active.
#2 Chimpanzee Tracking
Kyambura Gorge is one of the best places in Uganda to track chimpanzees. The gorge is like a secret forest, hidden below the savanna. Walking down into it feels like stepping into another world — tall trees, echoing calls, and dappled light. The guided trek to find the chimpanzees is exciting and educational, and seeing them up close is an incredible experience. Guests must be 12 years and older to join this activity.
#3 Boat Cruise on the Kazinga Channel
A boat cruise on the Kazinga Channel is one of the highlights of a stay here. The channel connects Lake George and Lake Edward and is full of life. You can see hippos wallowing in the water, elephants and buffaloes coming to drink, and many water birds like pelicans and kingfishers. The calm water and wildlife-filled banks make it a peaceful and unforgettable trip.
#4 Nature Walks and Hikes
For those who enjoy walking, there are many guided hikes and nature walks available. You can explore the Rwenzori Mountains, stroll along the savanna, or take short walks near the lodge to spot birds and smaller animals. The guides are friendly and knowledgeable, sharing stories about the plants, animals, and culture of the area.
#5 Community and Cultural Visits
Kyambura Gorge Lodge believes in responsible tourism and works closely with local communities. Guests can visit the Katwe Salt Lakes, where salt has been harvested for centuries using traditional methods. You can also visit the Omwani Coffee Tour, a local coffee farm where you’ll see how coffee is grown, harvested, and roasted — and enjoy a fresh cup at the end! Another interesting visit is to the Omumashaka Wetland, where you can see beautiful birds and learn how local people protect the ecosystem.
