Access & Location

Mutanda Lake Resort is located on a picturesque peninsula surrounded by Lake Mutanda. The area is extremely beautiful—quiet, green, and full of birds and fresh lake air.

The lodge is usually reached by:

  • A 45-minute road transfer from Kisoro
  • A 2-hour drive from Kabale
  • A 4-5-hour drive from Kigali (Rwanda)

Depending on your travel plan, a specialist can help recommend the most convenient route. Transfers are comfortable, and the drive itself is very scenic, offering views of rolling hills, farmlands, and sparkling lakes. Because the property sits on raised platforms above the water, it feels secluded and peaceful, far from busy towns and roads. This makes it an excellent place to relax before or after gorilla trekking.

Accommodation & Facilities

Mutanda Lake Resort has 18 guest cottages, all built on wooden platforms overlooking the lake. Every cottage has a private veranda, giving guests uninterrupted views of the volcanoes and water. These views are especially beautiful during sunrise and sunset.

All rooms are designed for comfort and warmth, offering comfy beds with mosquito nets; bedside lighting and storage space; en-suite bathrooms with running waterM and African-inspired décor including handmade crafts

Rooms can be arranged as single, double, twin, triple, or family units, making them suitable for solo travellers, couples, or families. The resort has recently added 5 luxury cottages, which are larger and more elevated, offering better views and an extra level of comfort.

The main building resembles a cozy Swiss chalet from the outside, but the interior is warm and African, with wooden furniture, local fabrics, and handmade art pieces.

Facilities include a welcoming restaurant overlooking the lake, a comfortable bar with great views, a large viewing deck, perfect for morning coffee or evening sundowners, three jetties with sunbeds, giving guests direct access to the lake and a special “dining boat,” perfect for private meals or sunset drinks on the water. These shared spaces are peaceful, relaxing, and ideal for soaking in the beauty of Lake Mutanda.

ACTIVITIES AT MUTANDA LAKE RESORT

Because Mutanda Lake Resort sits close to both Bwindi Impenetrable National Park and Mgahinga National Park, guests have a very wide range of activities to choose from. Whether you enjoy adventure, wildlife, culture, or relaxing on the water, there is something for everyone at this beautiful lakeside property.

1. Gorilla Trekking

Most visitors come to Mutanda Lake Resort to trek the famous mountain gorillas in southern Bwindi. The trek starts early in the morning with a briefing from park rangers. The walk can take 2 to 8 hours, depending on where the gorilla family is that day. Spending one hour with a gorilla family in the wild is a powerful and unforgettable moment, often described as the highlight of a trip to Uganda.

2. Gorilla Habituation Experience

For those who want more time with the gorillas, the Gorilla Habituation Experience allows visitors to spend up to 4 hours with a semi-habituated gorilla family. This activity is longer, more in-depth, and perfect for travellers who want a deeper look at gorilla behaviour and conservation work.

3. Golden Monkey Tracking (Mgahinga)

Mgahinga National Park is one of the only places in the world where you can track the rare and beautiful golden monkey. This activity is fun, less tiring than gorilla trekking, and suitable for families or guests who prefer shorter, easier hikes. Golden monkeys are playful, colourful, and great for photography.

4. Watersports on Lake Mutanda

Lake Mutanda is safe for swimming because it is bilharzia-free. The calm, clean water and stunning views of the volcanoes make it perfect for water activities such as:

  • Stand-up paddleboarding
  • Kayaking
  • Laser sailing
  • Swimming with views of the Virunga Mountains
  • Riding in a traditional dugout canoe
  • Motorboat trips, great for birdwatching or sunset cruises

The lake is full of birdlife, and if you are lucky, you may see playful otters swimming around too.

5. Bwindi & Lake Mutanda Excursions

The area around the resort is green, peaceful, and full of interesting things to explore. Popular excursions include:

  • Sunrise and sunset boat rides with magical lake views
  • Guided nature walks around the surrounding hills and villages
  • Forest walks along the edges of Bwindi’s rainforest
  • Birdwatching walks with a knowledgeable local guide

These activities are suitable for most guests and offer a gentle way to experience the nature and beauty of the region.

6. Sabinyo Volcano Climb (Mgahinga)

For adventure lovers, climbing Mount Sabinyo (3,669 m) is one of the most thrilling activities in the area. This volcano has three dramatic peaks, and the hike takes around 8 hours. The trail can be muddy, and several wooden ladders help hikers climb the steep sections.

The reward at the top is amazing—you stand at a point where Uganda, Rwanda, and the Democratic Republic of Congo all meet. From the summit, you can see lakes, forests, and the stunning Virunga Mountain range. This is a truly unforgettable hike for travellers who enjoy a challenge.

7. Cultural Tours & Batwa Community Visits

Guests can visit nearby villages to learn about daily life, farming, cooking, and local traditions. One of the most meaningful cultural experiences here is visiting the Batwa community, the indigenous forest people who originally lived in Bwindi and Mgahinga. During the visit, the Batwa share their stories, music, dances, and traditional forest knowledge. This experience offers deep cultural insight and helps support this community’s heritage and livelihood.
