If you want to see primates, Uganda is the place to be. Many of the people we organize Uganda safari tours for want to see primates during their trip. On this page, we will tell you what you can expect from our primate tours in Uganda.

Uganda is full of primates

One of the things that makes Uganda so special is its incredible number of primates. In many safari countries, like Kenya or Tanzania, the focus is on the Big Five.  Uganda is different. Its green and diverse landscapes are perfect for primates. Here, you find some of Africa’s most unique species.

The most famous is the mountain gorilla. They live only in Uganda, Rwanda, and the Congo. Nowhere else in the world. But there is much more. Uganda is home to golden monkeys and chimpanzees.

You will also see olive baboons, vervet monkeys, black-and-white colobus, blue monkeys, red colobus, and red-tailed monkeys. At night, you may even spot bush babies and pottos. Each park has its own highlights. Mountain gorillas live in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest and Mgahinga National Park.

Chimpanzees are best seen in Kibale National Park. Golden monkeys are found in Mgahinga, high in the volcanic forests. Every landscape brings new species. And every primate encounter feels different.

The highlights of the trip

The focus of the Uganda primate tour is, of course, on monkeys. But Uganda has so much more to offer. As you travel between parks to spot primates, you will see stunning landscapes and experience the beautiful, rich Ugandan culture. Here are our highlights:

The gorillas and chimpanzees are not to be missed

Mountain gorillas are one of the main reasons people travel to Uganda. Together with Rwanda and the Congo, Uganda is one of the only places on Earth where you can see them in the wild. Meeting a gorilla family during a trek is powerful and unforgettable.

Chimpanzees are just as special. They are our closest relatives. Their faces and hands look strikingly human. They are curious and full of energy.

Chimpanzees often come close. They look at you. Sometimes they sit nearby and observe you in silence. Watching them play, groom, and interact is fascinating. Seeing gorillas and chimpanzees in their natural forest home is something you will never forget.
