Tropical diseases in Uganda

Uganda is known for its incredible biodiversity. From wildlife to landscapes, nature is everywhere. And yes, that also includes tropical bacteria and viruses.

Over the years, diseases like Ebola, Marburg, and Zika have occasionally made international headlines. The good news is that Uganda responds very quickly to outbreaks. The country works closely with major international health organizations like the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and World Health Organization (WHO).

For travelers, these diseases are extremely rare. Our advice is simple: do not worry too much. Uganda has strong experience in managing outbreaks and keeping travelers safe.

Mandatory health declaration for all travellers entering or existing Uganda

May 2026 update: Following the recent Ebola outbreak, the Uganda Ministry of Health has introduced a mandatory health declaration for all travellers entering or leaving Uganda.

This is part of strengthened health screening measures at all border points and airports, including Entebbe International Airport. To avoid delays during travel, all travellers are required to complete the form before arrival or departure.

The form is quick and easy to complete and usually takes around two minutes. All information submitted is treated confidentially and is used only for public health monitoring and disease prevention.

Travellers will be asked to provide:

  • Basic travel details, including date of arrival, point of entry, flight or vehicle number, and countries visited within the last 21 days
  • Personal information exactly as shown on the passport
  • Details about their stay in Uganda, including address and length of stay

Why is this form important?

  • It helps health authorities monitor possible exposure to infectious diseases
  • Travel history allows authorities to quickly identify and respond to possible health risks.
  • Authorities can contact travellers if a health concern is identified after entry.
  • Completing the form in advance helps reduce waiting times and makes the arrival process smoother.

What happens after submission?

  • You will receive a confirmation once the form has been submitted successfully
  • In some cases, you may also receive a QR code or reference number to show on arrival
  • At the airport or border, health officials may verify your submission and review your travel details

We strongly recommend completing the form before travelling to Uganda.

Yellow Fever in Uganda

There is a “negligible” risk of getting Yellow Fever in Uganda. Still, proof of Yellow Fever vaccination is mandatory for most travelers entering the country.

There are a few exceptions. For example, infants under one year old and travelers with an official medical exemption certificate may be exempt from the vaccine requirement.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), a Yellow Fever vaccination is valid for life. This means booster shots are no longer required.
