Mountain gorilla trekking sounds tough. And many travelers ask how difficult it really is. The truth is simple: it can be challenging, but most people can do it. The minimum age for gorilla trekking is 15. There is no upper age limit. Treks vary depending on where the gorilla family is, the terrain, the weather, and your fitness level. Some walks are short and gentle. Others can be steep, muddy, and take several hours. Rangers and guides are always there to help you along the way. You can also hire porters to carry your bag and give support on difficult sections. With good walking shoes, rain gear, and a reasonable level of fitness, the experience is very manageable.
Here are a few considerations to help you plan well:
What's The Terrain Like?
On a gorilla trek, you will hike through dense rainforest and rugged landscapes. Expect steep slopes, uneven ground, thick vegetation, and sometimes muddy or slippery paths. The trail conditions can change quickly, especially after rain. Because of this, you do need a reasonable level of fitness, good balance, and steady footing.
The good news is that you don’t need to be super athletic or spend hours in the gym. The pace is usually slow and guided, with plenty of breaks along the way. Rangers and porters are there to support you when the terrain gets challenging. With proper hiking shoes, patience, and a positive attitude, most travelers handle the trek very well.
At What Altitude Are the Gorillas?
As the name suggests, mountain gorillas live at altitude. Bwindi Impenetrable Forest in Uganda (home to the world’s biggest population of mountain gorillas) ranges from 1,160 and 2,706 metres. Trekking at this altitude can sometimes make you breathe faster and feel tired more quickly. Dehydration is also common, so it’s important to carry at least two liters of water. Snacks are a good idea too (you will be surprised how hungry and thirsty you get on the trail). Take your time, pace yourself, and listen to your body.
With proper preparation, the altitude becomes part of the adventure, and the stunning forest views along the way make the climb worthwhile.
How Long Does the Gorilla Trek Take?
Rangers will try to match you with a gorilla family that suits your fitness and interest. Treks can be short and easy, taking about an hour, or longer and more challenging, lasting three hours or more. This doesn’t include the special one-hour encounter with the gorillas. On average, the entire gorilla trekking experience, including the walk back to your vehicle, takes about half a day. The duration depends on the location of the gorilla family, terrain, and weather.
What Weather Can You Expect?
As you can imagine, rain is very common in the rainforest. Temperatures can change quickly; from hot and humid during the day to cool and damp in the early morning or late afternoon. Wearing light, breathable layers, a waterproof jacket, and good hiking boots will help you stay comfortable. A hat, gloves, and a small backpack for snacks and water are also useful. With the right gear, rain or shine, your gorilla trek will be an unforgettable experience.
What Help Can You Get?
Gorilla trekking is guided by expert rangers, supported by porters and, of course, your Choose Uganda Safaris driver guide. Our guides know the gorillas well and can advise on what to pack, ensure you have enough water, and help organise walking poles.
At the gorilla trekking briefing point, rangers will explain the trek and give you the chance to hire a porter. Porters are invaluable. They carry your belongings and help you navigate tricky trails, making the hike much easier.
For visitors who need extra support, there is even a simple chair-style stretcher service (Sedan chair). Originally an emergency solution, it now allows older or less-able guests to safely reach the gorillas. With the right team, equipment, and guidance, almost anyone can enjoy a gorilla trek comfortably. Our travel consultants can arrange all these services to ensure your trek is safe, fun, and unforgettable.
