At Choose Uganda Safaris, we are always searching for new, exciting, and truly Ugandan experiences to offer our guests. Uganda is blessed with countless natural wonders — from gorillas to crater lakes, from volcanic peaks to untamed rivers. One of the newest and most exciting adventures added to this list is jungle rafting on the Birira River in southwestern Uganda. This hidden gem, developed by Sana Gorilla Rafting, brings together the thrill of white-water rafting and the beauty of Uganda’s tropical rainforest in one unforgettable experience.
The Story Behind Sana Gorilla Rafting
Sana Gorilla Rafting was founded by Sadat, a passionate Ugandan rafting guide, and Nathalie, an adventurous traveller from the Netherlands.
Their story began in Jinja, the adventure capital of Uganda and home to the mighty Nile. During a rafting trip on the Nile, Nathalie found herself in Sadat’s raft.
That day marked the beginning of not only a friendship but a shared love for wild rivers and adventure travel. Together, Sadat and Nathalie rafted across Uganda, Iceland, Canada, and England — chasing rapids, exploring cultures, and learning what makes river adventures truly special.
After years of travelling, they decided to settle down and create something meaningful. They chose Western Uganda, a region of incredible natural beauty, as the perfect place to start their dream: a safe, scenic, and accessible rafting experience that connects people to both nature and local communities.
Their vision became reality with the launch of Jungle Rafting on the Birira River — Uganda’s newest adventure activity that’s already gaining attention among travellers looking for something unique and off the beaten path.
Rafting in Uganda: Beyond the Nile
Uganda is famously known as the source of the Nile River, the world’s longest river. The Nile’s rapids near Jinja are world-class, with powerful grade 5 waves and dramatic drops. The rapids there even have thrilling names like Bad Place and Overtime. For many adventure lovers, rafting the Nile is a bucket-list experience.
However, Jinja is located in eastern Uganda, far from most safari circuits that explore the west and southwest.
Because of this, many visitors miss out on Uganda’s rafting experiences entirely. That’s where the Birira River comes in — offering a fantastic alternative in the heart of western Uganda, close to many of the country’s main attractions.
Unlike the Nile, the Birira River is a class III–IV river, meaning it offers plenty of excitement but without the extreme intensity of grade 5 rapids.
You will still encounter rolling waves, continuous rapids, and thrilling twists and turns — but you won’t be flipping out of the boat every few minutes!
This makes the Birira River ideal for families, beginners, or anyone who wants adventure without too much adrenaline. A typical day of rafting starts around 9:00 a.m. with a briefing and safety introduction, followed by an unforgettable journey down the river until about 3:00 p.m.
Location: Where to Find Birira River Rafting
The Birira River Rafting base is perfectly located for anyone exploring western Uganda — the region that holds almost all of Uganda’s top highlights.
Here, you’ll find the Mountain Gorillas of Bwindi Impenetrable Forest, the playful Golden Monkeys, the curious Chimpanzees of Kibale National Park, and the famous Tree-Climbing Lions of Queen Elizabeth National Park.
It’s also home to the spectacular Rwenzori Mountains, the Virunga Volcanoes, and countless crater lakes scattered across lush green hills.
The Birira Rafting base camp lies conveniently between Queen Elizabeth National Park and Bwindi Impenetrable Forest — just 1.5 hours’ drive from Ishasha (in Queen Elizabeth) and about 2 hours from Buhoma, the main gorilla trekking sector of Bwindi. This makes it the perfect stopover or day trip between gorilla trekking and safari adventures.
Why You’ll Love Rafting on the Birira River
Rafting on the Birira River is not just an adventure; it’s an experience that immerses you in the raw beauty of Uganda’s tropical landscapes.
Imagine gliding through a dense jungle, surrounded by towering trees, chirping birds, and playful monkeys swinging from the branches.
As you navigate the river’s rolling rapids, you’ll pass banana plantations, green hills, and friendly villages, giving you a glimpse into both Uganda’s wild side and its warm community life.
This is a rafting trip that combines adventure, scenery, and culture — something rare and special. You’ll feel the thrill of the rapids, the calm of the rainforest, and the joy of discovering a new side of Uganda that few tourists ever see.
The experience is safe, fun, and suitable for everyone aged 8 and above. Whether you’re a family, a couple, or a solo traveller, you’ll find that the Birira River strikes the perfect balance between excitement and relaxation.
Safety First
Safety is at the heart of every trip with Sana Gorilla Rafting. The team takes your enjoyment and well-being very seriously.
Each rafting expedition is led by an experienced Trip Leader, who guides the group and ensures smooth navigation through every rapid.
In addition, there are always two safety kayakers accompanying each trip. These expert paddlers monitor the river, offer assistance when needed, and are ready to help if anyone falls into the water or simply wants to take a swim.
All guests receive proper safety equipment, including helmets and life jackets, and a full safety briefing before getting on the water.
With this highly professional setup, even first-time rafters can feel confident and relaxed, knowing they are in good hands.
Birira River Rafting Prices
The rafting trip is attractively priced, making it accessible to both locals and international visitors:
- Ugandan / East African Citizens: US$ 85
- Foreign Residents: US$ 105
- Foreign Non-Residents: US$ 125
The price includes all rafting gear, professional guides, and a delicious local lunch after your adventure — because no great day on the river is complete without good food!
Where to Stay Near Birira River
The night before your rafting adventure, you can stay in one of the local guesthouses in Rukungiri, which offer an authentic Ugandan experience away from the busy tourist trails. You’ll enjoy local hospitality, fresh food, and a peaceful night surrounded by nature.
Alternatively, if you’re coming from a safari, you can stay in the Ishasha sector of Queen Elizabeth National Park, which is about 1.5 hours away. Ishasha is famous for its tree-climbing lions and offers a variety of lodges ranging from budget to luxury.
Excitingly, Sana Gorilla Rafting is also working on building a lodge near the Birira River, which will make it even easier for visitors to stay close to the action. Keep an eye on their updates — soon, you might be able to sleep right beside the jungle river you rafted earlier that day!
