Mgahinga Gorilla National Park

Mgahinga Gorilla National Park – a magical piece of Uganda

Mgahinga Gorilla National Park is one of the most beautiful places in Uganda. It is part of the Virunga Volcanoes, which Uganda shares with Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo. You can’t go any further south than this while on safari in Uganda

Mgahinga Gorilla National Park boasts a magical and unique landscape: ancient volcanoes, crater lakes, and rising mist in the morning. And of course, there is wildlife. In the mountains, you will find mountain gorillas and golden monkeys, among other animals.

Mgahinga Gorilla National Park

Volcanoes and misty jungles

Mgahinga Gorilla National Park boasts breathtaking scenery. Green forest jungles, volcanoes, and mountain peaks. It is especially special during the rainy season. Mist hangs over the green jungle, the peaks of the mountains rising to prominence.

As the sun breaks through, the mist slowly dissipates. These are truly dramatic landscapes unlike anything you’ll see anywhere else in Uganda. The volcanoes in the area are inactive; their last eruptions have been decades.  Their craters have filled with water, creating beautiful lakes.

Lake Mutanda is one of those lakes. It is also the perfect place to stay during your visit to Mgahinga National Park. You will have some travel time to your activities. But that is a good thing: driving through the misty landscape early in the morning is an experience in itself.

Spot gorillas and golden monkeys

Mgahinga Gorilla National Park is one of two places in Uganda where you can go mountain gorilla trekking. But of course, there is more wildlife than just gorillas.

There are also golden monkeys – perhaps just as special. They live only in the Virunga Volcanoes. They are found nowhere else in the world. The mountains consist of rainforest.

So, you will see many primate species, but no savanna animals like giraffes and lions. Besides the primates, there are many smaller animals. For example, there are a great many endemic birds. So, for birdwatchers on Uganda birding tours, Mgahinga is a place to spend some time.

GOLDEN MONKEY TRACKING

Active travelers are in their element in Mgahinga Gorilla National Park

The southwestern region of Uganda is the ultimate destination for the more active traveler. You can climb the volcanic mountains, trek to see gorillas, or delve deeper into the local culture. These are our favorite activities in Mgahinga Gorilla National Park:

Climb a volcano

Mgahinga Gorilla National Park is home to three volcanoes. All of them can be climbed. The most popular is Mount Sabyinyo. You can reach the summit and return in one day. The hike is tough but rewarding. You gain a lot of height in a short time. This makes the climb challenging.

A ranger will guide you, and porters are there to help. You are never alone on the trail. Every step is worth the effort. When you reach the top, the views are breathtaking. On a clear day, the clouds open up. You can see Uganda, Rwanda, and Congo all at once. It is a powerful moment and a memory you will never forget.

Gorilla trekking

In Uganda, you can trek wild gorillas in two places: Bwindi Impenetrable National Park and Mgahinga Gorilla National Park. The advantage of Mgahinga National Park is that the trekking is often slightly easier, as the mountain range is less steep than in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest.

Golden monkey trekking

Golden monkeys

The golden monkey is a unique species of primate that lives only in the Virunga Mountains in the Albertine Rift. It is a beautiful monkey to see. They are medium-sized and have a cuddly appearance.  We recommend seeing both the gorillas and the golden monkeys during your safari in Mgahinga.  If you find the gorillas too expensive, the golden monkeys are a good alternative. They are over $700 cheaper.

Birdwatching

Rwenzori Turaco

In the early morning, you venture into the park with a specialized guide when birds are most active. You walk through bamboo forest, montane rainforest, and open heathlands while listening to song and subtle movements in the canopy. Mgahinga Gorilla National Park is known for its special Albertine Rift species. You stand a chance of seeing the colorful Rwenzori turaco, as well as the regal sunbird, golden-winged sunbird, and the rare Kivu ground thrush. With a bit of luck, you will see birds up close against a backdrop of misty volcanoes and wooded slopes.

Visiting the Batwa

batwa

Mgahinga Gorilla National Park was once the home of the Batwa people. They are a traditional hunter-gatherer community. For many years, they lived inside the forest. Today, the Batwa are no longer allowed to live in the park. They now live in villages around it. Visitors can choose to meet them through the Batwa Trail. You will walk with members of the community. They explain how they lived in the forest. You learn how they hunted and prepared food. They also show how they used bows and arrows.  The Batwa story is a sad one. They were forced to leave their ancestral land. This makes the visit emotional. Still, it is a meaningful and memorable experience.

About Mgahinga Gorilla National Park

A tour of Mgahinga Gorilla National Park is a unique experience. We can imagine you have many questions about this. We have answered the most important ones below. If your question is not listed, feel free to contact us.

Mgahinga Gorilla National Park may be Uganda’s smallest gorilla park, but it offers one of the most extraordinary wildlife experiences in Africa.

What makes Mgahinga truly special is its intimate and exclusive gorilla trekking experience. Only one habituated gorilla family can be visited here, meaning far fewer tourists and a much quieter forest experience. Even more remarkable, this group is famous for having three massive silverbacks living together — an incredibly rare and impressive sight in the wild.

The trekking itself often takes place in beautiful bamboo forest on the slopes of the Virunga volcanoes. Compared to the dense jungle of Bwindi, visibility here can be much more open, creating incredible photographic opportunities and more personal wildlife encounters.

Mgahinga is also the only place in Uganda where you can track the rare golden monkey, a playful and endangered primate found in the bamboo zones of the Virunga Mountains.

Then there is the scenery. Towering volcanic peaks rise above the forest, creating one of the most dramatic landscapes in East Africa. Adventurous travelers can even hike the volcanoes themselves for breathtaking views across Uganda, Rwanda, and Congo.

The combination of mountain gorillas, three huge silverbacks, golden monkeys, volcano hikes, and very few crowds gives Mgahinga Gorilla National Park a wild and magical atmosphere unlike anywhere else in Uganda.

Mgahinga Gorilla National Park is located in the far southwest of Uganda, near the borders of Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo. From Kampala or Entebbe, the journey by road takes around 9 to 10 hours. The drive is long but very scenic, passing through rolling hills, rural villages, tea plantations, and beautiful countryside landscapes along the way.

For a quicker and more comfortable option, domestic flights are available from Entebbe International Airport to Kisoro Airstrip, which is located close to the park.

Many travelers also combine Mgahinga with Bwindi Impenetrable National Park. The journey between the two parks usually takes a few hours by road through the mountainous landscapes of southwestern Uganda. Another popular route is via Kigali in Rwanda. The drive from Kigali to Mgahinga takes about 4 hours and is often considered the fastest and easiest way to reach the park.

Both Mgahinga Gorilla National Park and Bwindi Impenetrable National Park offer incredible gorilla trekking experiences, but they feel very different. Which is “better” really depends on the type of experience you are looking for.

Bwindi is larger and home to many habituated gorilla families spread across different sectors. This gives visitors more permit availability, more lodge options, and a wider choice of trekking experiences. The forest itself feels ancient, dense, and truly wild. Gorilla sightings are excellent, but the terrain can sometimes be steep and physically demanding.

Mgahinga, on the other hand, offers a more exclusive and quieter experience. Only one habituated gorilla family is available for trekking, which means fewer visitors in the forest. This group is especially famous for having three massive silverbacks together — something rarely seen elsewhere. The scenery is also very different, with open bamboo forest and dramatic Virunga volcanoes creating spectacular views during the trek.

If you want variety, more permit options, and the classic deep-jungle gorilla experience, Bwindi is often the stronger choice. If you prefer fewer crowds, volcanic scenery, and a more intimate trek, Mgahinga can feel even more special.

The good news is that both parks offer unforgettable encounters with mountain gorillas. There is no wrong choice.

Mgahinga Gorilla National Park currently has one habituated gorilla family available for tourism. This is the famous Nyakagezi Gorilla Family, one of the most well-known gorilla groups in Uganda. The group is especially famous because it includes several powerful silverbacks living together peacefully — something that is quite rare among mountain gorillas.

One of the reasons many travelers love trekking in Mgahinga is the exclusivity. With only one gorilla family and limited permits available each day, the experience feels quieter, more personal, and far less crowded than in many other gorilla trekking destinations.

The Nyakagezi family usually ranges through the park’s beautiful bamboo forests on the slopes of the Virunga volcanoes, creating a spectacular setting for gorilla encounters.
