Three things you will love about Kulu Ora
Tents with stunning river views, no-traffic game drives and an inspired food menu that fuses local ingredients with creative techniques.
Rooms
Kulu Ora offers just 11 beautifully designed canvas suites, creating an exclusive safari experience. Each suite has a private terrace with a plunge pool overlooking the mighty River Nile. It is the perfect place to relax while watching hippos in the water or crocodiles basking along the riverbank.
You can choose from spacious luxury suites or a two-bedroom suite that is ideal for families or friends travelling together. Inside, you will find handcrafted furniture made from Ugandan Mugavu hardwood, comfortable linen sofas, and natural fabrics that create a warm and elegant atmosphere. Every piece has been made by skilled local carpenters.
The bathrooms are equally impressive. Twin copper basins and a freestanding bathtub with river views make it easy to unwind after a day on safari.
The riverside swimming pool is a wonderful place to relax with a drink while enjoying uninterrupted views of the Nile. You will also find comfortable daybeds, a small library, and beautiful wildlife photography by Ugandan photographer Jonathan Benaiah. Before you leave, browse the boutique for locally made crafts, bags, and fabrics. Every purchase helps support conservation through the WildPlaces Conservation Foundation.
Food and drink
Dining at Kulu Ora is a memorable part of your stay. The menus have been created using fresh local ingredients, combined with international flavours for a modern Afro-fusion dining experience. You can look forward to delicious dishes such as crispy fish with pineapple and green chilli salsa, slow-braised beef served with matoke (plantain), and tamarind-glazed sweet potato with crunchy slaw.
To finish, treat yourself to desserts like roasted mango panna cotta with sweet coconut milk. Most meals are served on the outdoor terrace overlooking the Nile or in the cosy dining room, where you can admire paintings by Ugandan artist Daniel Atenyi. Many of the herbs, vegetables, chillies, lemons, and pawpaws used in the kitchen are grown in the lodge’s own garden, while other fresh ingredients are sourced locally whenever possible. For a truly special evening, you can also arrange a private bush dinner in the surrounding wilderness or on the open plains.
Activities
Your safari adventures at Kulu Ora are led by experienced guides who know Murchison Falls National Park exceptionally well. On a game drive, you may watch elephants gathering along the river, spot graceful Rothschild’s giraffes on the plains, or see lions stalking antelopes and warthogs.
Even the guides are still discovering new wildlife sightings in this remote part of the park. There is so much more to enjoy beyond game drives. You can join a guided walking safari, head out on an exciting night drive, or explore the park’s incredible birdlife, with more than 450 bird species recorded here. If you enjoy fishing, you can also spend time on the Nile trying your luck in Africa’s most famous river.
What to do nearby
No stay at Kulu Ora is complete without visiting the spectacular Murchison Falls. A boat cruise along the Nile is one of the best ways to experience the park. Along the way, you can spot hippos, crocodiles, elephants, and a variety of birds before reaching the base of the world’s most powerful waterfall. You should also visit the Top of the Falls. Here, you can watch the Nile squeeze through a narrow seven-metre gorge before crashing into the gorge below with incredible force. Stand close enough and you may even feel the cool spray on your face as you witness one of Africa’s most impressive natural wonders.
The Story Behind Kulu Ora
When you stay at Kulu Ora, you are supporting a lodge built with conservation at its heart. The camp is owned by WildPlaces Africa, a family-run company founded by Jonathan and Pamela Wright.
After growing up in Uganda and spending several years in Canada, Jonathan returned with his family to create a collection of safari lodges dedicated to protecting Uganda’s wildlife and wild places. Today, the company is run together with their children, Fergus and Annabelle.
Opened in March 2026, Kulu Ora was built from the ground up by skilled local builders and carpenters. Reaching the site was no easy task. The team crossed rivers, marshes, and dense wilderness before discovering this spectacular stretch of the Nile. Your stay also helps support conservation. A US$25 conservation levy is included for every guest and goes directly to the WildPlaces Conservation Foundation, helping protect Uganda’s national parks, wildlife, and surrounding communities.
Wellness
After a day on safari, you can unwind with a relaxing massage, manicure, or pedicure at the lodge’s peaceful riverside spa. Treatments use locally made natural oils, adding a special Ugandan touch to your wellness experience. The lodge also plans to introduce “wellness in the wild” activities, including yoga, meditation, and forest bathing, giving you even more ways to relax while surrounded by nature.
