Your Itinerary Detail

Day 1: City tour Kigali/Volcanoes National Park

Your professional driver-guide will pick you up from your hotel in Kigali or from Kigali International Airport and brief you on the trip.

You will visit the Kigali Genocide Memorial Centre, opened in 2004 to mark 10 years since the genocide against the Tutsi. It is a museum that explains Rwanda’s heartbreaking history and honours the victims.

After the visit, you will drive to Musanze, the gateway to Volcanoes National Park, home to mountain gorillas and golden monkeys. In the afternoon, you will visit the Gorilla Doctors headquarters, the only organisation in the world dedicated to treating and protecting mountain and eastern lowland gorillas. They monitor gorilla families, check for illness or injury, and provide medical care when needed. Today’s drive is about 2.5 hours.

Accommodation: Mountain Gorilla View Lodge (Midrange)

Included Meals: Lunch & Dinner

After breakfast, you will visit the Ellen DeGeneres Campus of the Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund. This world-leading research centre focuses on protecting and studying gorillas while supporting local communities in conservation.

Learn about the life of the legendary American Primatologist, Dian Fossey who spend 18 years in Volcanies National Park protecting and saving the moungtain gorillas from extinction until she was brutally murdered.

Musanze offers many optional activities, including Golden Monkey Trekking in the Virunga Mountains, hiking Mount Bisoke, or relaxing with a canoe ride on the Mukungwa River. You can also visit Redrocks Rwanda to see how banana beer is made and enjoy dancing, drumming, and basket-weaving demonstrations.

Special information

Some optional activities, like the Golden Monkey Trek, may overlap with the included visit to the Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund Research Centre. Contact us for details. The Golden Monkey Trek can be pre-booked to secure your spot, but you may also book it locally if you prefer—just note that it is very popular and spaces are limited.

Today you will leave Rwanda and cross into Uganda as you drive to Queen Elizabeth National Park. This park is famous for its wildlife and is home to 618 bird species, 10 types of primates (including chimpanzees), and 95 different mammals including the rare tree-climbing lions.

The drive to your lodge will feel like a mini-safari, so keep watching for animals such as elephants, buffalo, hippos, warthogs, Nile crocodiles, leopards, hyenas, lions, and even chimpanzees along the way.

The total driving time is about 6.5 hours.

Accommodation: Bush Lodge – Banda (Midrange)

Included Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

Start your day with an early breakfast at the lodge, then go out for a morning game drive. Driving through the Kasenyi Plains gives you a great chance to see many well-known African animals.

You may see African elephants, buffaloes, kob, bushbuck, hippos, giant forest hogs, warthogs, Nile crocodiles, hyenas, leopards, and many other animals. This part of the park is also very beautiful, especially in the soft morning light. Bird lovers can look for special species like the Shoebill, African Hobby, Rüppell’s Vulture, Bateleur, Brown Snake Eagle, Peregrine Falcon, Grey Kestrel, African Finfoot, African Skimmer, Palm-nut Vulture, and Papyrus Gonolek.

After the game drive, return to the lodge to rest and have lunch. In the afternoon, enjoy another exciting activity! Go to the Mweya Jetty for a two-hour boat cruise starting at 2pm. A boat trip on the Kazinga Channel is a must-do when visiting the park. You will float just a few metres from hundreds of hippos and buffaloes, while elephants drink along the shore.

You will also see many waterbirds, including African Skimmer, pelicans, cormorants, African Openbill, Saddle-billed Stork, Glossy Ibis, African Wattled Lapwing, Water Thick-knee, Grey-hooded Gull, and several kinds of terns. Nile crocodiles can also be seen along the water’s edge. After the boat cruise, take a short game drive along the channel track as you go back to the lodge for rest and dinner.

Optional Activities

Predator Tracking – USD 120

In the morning, join a special safari led by a park biologist. This expert studies lion prides and some leopards. You will learn about their behaviour and movements and get a special look into their world. The lions (and sometimes leopards) wear radio collars, so you are almost sure to see lions. Leopard sightings are not always certain. Because you are with the biologist, you can go off the main tracks. The money from this activity supports wildlife research.

Private Boat Safari – USD 350

A private boat trip gives a closer and more personal wildlife experience. A smaller boat lets you get nearer to animals, move at your own pace, and enjoy the moment with just your group.

Kyambura Gorge Trekking – USD 120

You can also take a stunning walk through the Kyambura Gorge. This deep, 100-metre-high and 11-kilometre-long valley cuts through the savannah and has a beautiful rainforest along the Kyambura River. The forest is home to chimpanzees and other wildlife. Rangers will try to help you find them, but sightings are only about 50%. Even so, the walk itself is beautiful and one of the best hikes in the country. It is a fun and adventurous trek with some climbing and scrambling.

Accommodation: Bush Lodge – Banda (Midrange)

Included Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

Today you will enjoy a beautiful and scenic journey. The 6-hour drive takes you along red dirt roads, past rolling mountains, crater lakes, tea plantations, rainforests, and small African villages as you head to Rushaga in the southern part of Bwindi.

Your lodge sits right on the shores of Lake Mutanda—one of the most beautiful lakes in Africa—where you can relax and take in the breathtaking views of the lake and the Virunga Volcanoes. You may also choose to swim, or explore the lake by canoe (a traditional dugout), kayak, stand-up paddleboard, or sailboat.

About Lake Mutanda

Lake Mutanda lies in the far southwest of Uganda at the base of the Virunga Volcanoes, a dramatic mountain chain shared by Uganda, Rwanda, and Congo. The area is surrounded by lush rainforests where the endangered mountain gorillas live, making the lake a perfect base for gorilla trekking. These gentle giants can be found in the nearby Mgahinga Gorilla National Park and Bwindi Impenetrable Forest. The lake area is also rich in wildlife—you may spot kingfishers, grey crowned cranes, otters, chameleons, frogs, lizards, and many other unique species.

Optional Water Activities at Lake Mutanda

Mutanda Lake Resort offers a variety of water sports. You can swim in the clear, bilharzia-free lake or relax on one of the jetties. For adventure, try stand-up paddleboarding, kayaking, or sailing. For a more traditional experience, explore the lake in a dugout canoe. There is also a motorboat available—great for birdwatching or simply enjoying the peaceful scenery with a drink in hand. All activities can be booked directly at the resort.

Middle class: Mutanda Lake Resort – Standard Cottage (Midrange)

Included Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

This morning, you will travel into Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park for one of the biggest highlights of your trip — gorilla trekking.

The Bwindi rainforest, together with the Virunga Mountains in Rwanda, is the main home for mountain gorillas. Although the forest is not very large, it shelters almost half of all mountain gorillas in the world. It is also home to 120 other mammal species and 350 different birds.

During your trek, you will walk and crouch through thick forest with the help of skilled Uganda Wildlife Authority rangers. They will guide you by following signs such as gorilla dung, nests, chewed bamboo, and broken branches.

Then comes the magical moment — standing just meters away from a powerful silverback and his family. Watching them act calmly and naturally in front of you is an experience you will never forget.

Accommodation: Mutanda Lake Resort – Standard Cottage (Midrange)

Included Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

Special information

Gorilla visits are carefully managed to protect their health and natural behaviour. You must wear a surgical face mask when close to the gorillas to reduce the risk of passing on diseases.

Be sure to bring rain gear, a packed lunch, plenty of water, gloves, a hat, and a waterproof bag to protect your camera in case of rain.

You will be given a walking stick, and you can also hire a porter to carry your daypack and assist you during the trek. The cost is USD 20, plus an optional tip. Hiring a porter not only makes your trek easier but also supports local communities. Many porters are former poachers who now earn an income through conservation and tourism, helping to protect the gorillas they once hunted.

After breakfast, you will begin the journey of about 4-to-5-hour drive back to Kigali. There are no planned activities upon arrival, marking the end of your adventure.

If you wish to extend your stay in the city, let us know and we can assist. Please ensure that international flights from Kigali are booked after 4 pm. Note that Uganda is one hour ahead of Rwanda (Uganda: GMT +3, Rwanda: GMT +2).
