Erebero Hills

Erebero Hills Lodge

Scheduled to open at the beginning of 2026, Erebero Hills Lodge is set to become one of the most impressive new lodges in Uganda’s Bwindi region. With only eight luxury suites perched high on a forested hillside, the lodge offers wide, sweeping views over the valley and across the ancient montane forest of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park. Its name, Erebero, means “a place where you can see far”—a fitting description for a property designed around views, light, and the natural drama of the landscape.

Created by Asilia Africa, known for its thoughtful design and consistently excellent safari properties across Africa, Erebero Hills is expected to set a new benchmark for comfort, architecture, and guest experience in this part of Uganda. With direct access to world-class gorilla trekking, year-round operations, and a fully inclusive stay (all meals, most drinks, and packed lunches for trekking), the lodge is ideal for travellers seeking both adventure and luxury in the heart of East Africa.

Access & Location

Erebero Hills sits on the northern edge of Bwindi Impenetrable Forest in south-western Uganda, one of the most ecologically rich areas on the African continent. Bwindi is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, famous for its steep ridges, thick rainforest, and remarkable wildlife—including almost half of the world’s remaining mountain gorillas.

The lodge is easy to reach:

  • By air: Daily flights from Entebbe to Kihihi Airstrip take around 1 hour 45 minutes.
  • By road: The drive from Kihihi to the lodge takes approximately 1.5 hours, passing through farmland, small villages, and dramatic hilly landscapes.

Guests arrive to a peaceful hillside setting where mist rolls across the valley each morning and birdsong echoes through the trees. The isolation feels complete, yet the access to trekking starting points is ideal.

Accommodation & Facilities

Erebero Hills will feature eight glass-fronted luxury suites designed to blend modern comfort with the feeling of being completely surrounded by nature. Each suite is positioned to capture uninterrupted views of the forest canopy and distant hills. The open-plan design and the use of natural materials ensure an atmosphere of calm, space, and serenity. Each double or twin-bedded suite includes:

  • An open-plan bedroom and lounge, giving a feeling of light and spaciousness
  • A boot room at the entrance—perfect for storing trekking gear
  • Floor-to-ceiling windows offering dramatic panoramic views
  • A large private deck with comfortable outdoor seating
  • A spacious en-suite bathroom with: Double basins, Freestanding bathtub overlooking the forest, Indoor and outdoor showers and A separate toilet cubicle

The décor will reflect Asilia’s signature style—warm, clean, organic, and sophisticated—with high-quality finishes and thoughtful amenities to support guests after long days in the forest. Everything is designed to ensure comfort while keeping the experience connected to the natural surroundings.

Main Lodge Areas

The main area of Erebero Hills will be one of its most striking features. Built on wooden stilts and positioned for maximum impact, it appears to hover over the hillside, giving guests a bird’s-eye perspective of the valley below.

Facilities include:

  • A sunken fireplace lounge, ideal for storytelling and relaxing on cool evenings
  • Indoor and outdoor dining spaces with far-reaching views
  • A library and information centre for learning about Bwindi’s wildlife and cultural heritage
  • A pool deck positioned to capture sunlight and spectacular views
  • An outdoor pool bar and shaded gazebo, perfect for relaxing after trekking
  • In-suite spa treatments available on request, offering everything from massages to soothing foot treatments after a demanding hike

The design balances elegance and simplicity, ensuring that nature is always the star of the show.

Activities at Erebero Hills Lodge

1. Gorilla Trekking

The main reason travellers come to Bwindi is to spend time with the mountain gorillas—and Erebero Hills is perfectly located for this once-in-a-lifetime experience.

Gorilla trekking begins at dawn. Guests are assigned to a group of eight and are accompanied by skilled rangers, trackers, and porters who lead the way into the forest. The trek can take anywhere from one to several hours depending on the gorillas’ location, and the terrain is steep in places, but the reward is extraordinary.

Once a gorilla family is found, visitors are allowed one magical hour with them. Watching these gentle, powerful, intelligent animals up close—feeding, playing, resting, grooming—feels like stepping into another world. For many guests, it is one of the most emotional and unforgettable wildlife encounters of their lives.

Packed lunches, water, and trekking essentials are provided by the lodge.

2. Batwa Community Visit

The Batwa people are the original forest dwellers of this region, known for their deep knowledge of medicinal plants, hunting methods, and forest traditions that date back thousands of years. Visiting the Batwa offers a meaningful insight into a culture that has lived in harmony with the forest for generations.

Asilia plans to support responsible, culturally respectful tours that highlight: Traditional music, dance, and storytelling; Ancient hunting and gathering techniques; and Skills such as beadwork, weaving, candle-making, and soap-making. These visits are designed to celebrate Batwa heritage while also supporting community-led conservation and sustainable livelihoods.

3. Nature Walks

Bwindi is famous not only for gorillas but also for its extraordinary biodiversity. Guided nature walks allow guests to experience the forest slowly and quietly, discovering details that might be missed during a focused gorilla trek.

Nature walks may include:

  • Birding: Bwindi is home to more than 350 bird species, many of them rare or endemic.
  • Butterfly walks: The forest hosts hundreds of butterfly species in every imaginable colour.
  • Waterfall hikes: Gentle trails leading to hidden forest waterfalls.

Asilia also plans to offer:

  • Reforestation walks, where guests learn about conservation and tree planting
  • Garden tours
  • Local tea tastings, offering a taste of the region’s agricultural heritage

Each walk offers a different way to connect with the forest’s beauty, rhythms, and life.

The Erebero Hills Experience
