Access And Location

Erebero Hills sits on the northern edge of Bwindi Impenetrable Forest in south-western Uganda. This region is one of the most ecologically rich areas in Africa. Bwindi is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is known for steep ridges and dense rainforest. The forest is also home to almost half of the world’s remaining mountain gorillas.

The lodge is easy to reach. By air: Daily flights operate from Entebbe to Kihihi Airstrip. The flight takes about 1 hour and 45 minutes. By road: The drive from Kihihi to the lodge takes around 1.5 hours. The route passes farmland and small villages. Rolling hills and dramatic scenery unfold along the way.

Guests arrive at a quiet hillside retreat. Mist drifts across the valley in the early mornings. Birdsong fills the air. The feeling is peaceful and remote. Despite the sense of isolation, the location is practical. Access to gorilla trekking starting points is excellent. Guests enjoy privacy without long transfers. Erebero Hills offers the rare balance of seclusion and convenience. It is a calm base in one of Uganda’s most extraordinary landscapes.

Activities at Erebero Hills Lodge

#1 Gorilla Trekking

The main reason travellers come to Bwindi is to spend time with the mountain gorillas—and Erebero Hills is perfectly located for this once-in-a-lifetime experience.

Gorilla trekking begins at dawn. Guests are assigned to a group of eight and are accompanied by skilled rangers, trackers, and porters who lead the way into the forest.

The trek can take anywhere from one to several hours depending on the gorillas’ location, and the terrain is steep in places, but the reward is extraordinary.

Once a gorilla family is found, visitors are allowed one magical hour with them. Watching these gentle, powerful, intelligent animals up close—feeding, playing, resting, grooming—feels like stepping into another world. For many guests, it is one of the most emotional and unforgettable wildlife encounters of their lives. Packed lunches, water, and trekking essentials are provided by the lodge.

#2 Batwa Community Visit

The Batwa people are the original forest dwellers of this region, known for their deep knowledge of medicinal plants, hunting methods, and forest traditions that date back thousands of years.

Visiting the Batwa offers a meaningful insight into a culture that has lived in harmony with the forest for generations. Asilia plans to support responsible, culturally respectful tours that highlight: Traditional music, dance, and storytelling; Ancient hunting and gathering techniques; and Skills such as beadwork, weaving, candle-making, and soap-making. These visits are designed to celebrate Batwa heritage while also supporting community-led conservation and sustainable livelihoods.

#3 Nature Walks

Bwindi is famous not only for gorillas but also for its extraordinary biodiversity. Guided nature walks allow guests to experience the forest slowly and quietly, discovering details that might be missed during a focused gorilla trek.

Nature walks may include:

  • Birding: Bwindi is home to more than 350 bird species, many of them rare or endemic.
  • Butterfly walks: The forest hosts hundreds of butterfly species in every imaginable colour.
  • Waterfall hikes: Gentle trails leading to hidden forest waterfalls.

Asilia also plans to offer:

  • Reforestation walks, where guests learn about conservation and tree planting
  • Garden tours
  • Local tea tastings, offering a taste of the region’s agricultural heritage

Each walk offers a different way to connect with the forest’s beauty, rhythms, and life.
