Clouds Mountain Gorilla Lodge

Clouds Mountain Gorilla Lodge in Nkuringo, Bwindi

Clouds Mountain Gorilla Lodge is one of seven lodges operated by the family-run, Uganda-focused Wildplaces Africa, located in the Nkuringo sector of Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park. Getting there is an adventure in itself: fly into Entebbe International Airport, take a domestic flight to Kisoro, then continue on a 90-minute “road” transfer along steep, red-dirt tracks.

Perched on a ridge over 2,000 meters above sea level, Clouds boasts some of the highest and most spectacular views in Uganda, overlooking the Virunga Volcanoes that stretch across Uganda, Rwanda, and Congo. The lodge sits near the town of Nkuringo and other lodges, making it an ideal base for gorilla trekking — just a 5-minute drive to the Nkuringo trailhead or 45 minutes to Rushaga.

A key highlight of staying here is the lodge’s partnership with the Nkuringo Conservation Development Foundation (NCDF). Guests are invited on walks to visit an NCDF-funded school, hospital, and tea plantations, all just a short stroll away, offering a meaningful connection to the local community and conservation efforts.

A note of caution, gorilla treks from Clouds are some of the most physically demanding in the whole of Bwindi. However other, easier routes are also accessible from the nearby Rushaga sector.

Activities at Clouds Mountain Gorilla Lodge

Clouds offers a variety of activities, making it a great base for adventure and relaxation. The lodge is famous for gorilla trekking, but there are many other activities for visitors to enjoy:

Gorilla trekking on Luxury Uganda Safaris

#1 Gorilla trekking:

The lodge is close to a gorilla trekking trail. There is also a trail to the Rushaga gorilla family, about 45 minutes’ drive from the lodge. The trails can be steep and require a good level of fitness. But the experience of seeing gorillas in their natural habitat is unforgettable. Trekkers can spend up to an hour with the gorillas and can get as close as six metres to the group. Seeing these gentle giants in the forest is magical and a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

#2 Birding and waterfall hikes:

Clouds also offers birdwatching and rainforest hikes, including a trip to the Munyaga Waterfall. Bwindi has around 350 bird species, so birdwatchers will be in heaven! Walking through the rainforest is also a great way to see different plants, insects, and wildlife, with plenty of photo opportunities along the way.

#3 Cultural visits to the Batwa tribe:

Visitors can take a walk to the nearby Batwa settlement. Here, you can meet the Batwa people, learn about their culture, and watch a musical performance. These visits are a wonderful way to understand the local communities and their way of life. All activities are led by experienced guides who are knowledgeable about the forest, wildlife, and local culture. They ensure you have a safe, enjoyable, and memorable experience.

Tips for Visiting

  • Fitness: Some gorilla treks are steep and physically challenging. Make sure you are prepared.
  • Clothing: Bring comfortable clothes and sturdy walking shoes. A rain jacket is a must in the rainforest.
  • Photography: Cameras are highly recommended! Both the wildlife and scenery are very photogenic.
  • Local culture: Respect the Batwa community and the environment during your visit.
  • Booking: Gorilla permits are limited, so it’s best to book in advance.
