Kyaninga Lodge

Kyaninga Lodge

Kyaninga Lodge is one of Uganda’s most beautiful and luxurious lodges, set high on a hill overlooking the clear blue waters of Lake Kyaninga, a crater lake formed centuries ago.

From the lodge’s wooden terraces, guests can enjoy breathtaking views of the Rwenzori Mountains, the lush forests, and the deep green hills surrounding Fort Portal. It is a place of peace, style, and comfort — the perfect stop after a long safari or before chimpanzee trekking in Kibale National Park, which is just one hour away.

The lodge was built by Steve Williams, an Englishman who fell in love with this spot while exploring Uganda. He wanted to create a special place that blends natural beauty with fine comfort — and he succeeded. Built entirely from timber, Kyaninga Lodge feels like a warm log cabin in the clouds, with every detail carefully crafted by hand. It’s a great place for honeymooners, families, or anyone looking for a quiet escape with a touch of elegance.

Access & Location

Kyaninga Lodge is located about 15–20 minutes from Fort Portal, in western Uganda. You can reach it by a short flight from Entebbe International Airport to Kasese Airstrip, followed by a one-hour drive to the lodge. It’s also easy to reach by road — a 5- to 6-hour scenic drive from Kampala, passing tea plantations, villages, and rolling hills.

When you arrive, the sight of the lodge perched high above the lake is unforgettable. The air is cool, the views stretch for miles, and you instantly feel close to nature.

Accommodation At Kyaninga Lodge

Kyaninga Lodge offers nine luxury cottages, all built from beautiful local wood and set on stilts to blend into the natural hillside. Each cottage is private and connected to the main building by raised wooden walkways, giving guests stunning views of the crater lake and mountains.

Seven cottages are designed for couples, while two are family cottages with a fun upstairs loft for children.

Each cottage includes:

  • A large double or twin bed with mosquito nets
  • A private balcony with lake and mountain views
  • A spacious bathroom with twin sinks, glass shower, and a claw-foot bathtub
  • Solar-powered hot water and lighting
  • A comfortable seating area with chairs and a small table

Everything inside the rooms is handmade, from the wooden furniture to the small decorations. Soft lighting, fresh flowers, and warm fabrics make every room cozy and romantic.

From your private deck, you can sit and watch the sunrise over the lake or listen to the sounds of birds in the trees — it’s truly peaceful.

Dining & Facilities At Kyaninga Lodge

Kyaninga Lodge offers fine dining in a relaxed atmosphere. The restaurant serves fresh meals made from local ingredients and vegetables grown in the lodge’s own gardens.

Breakfast includes fruits, eggs, pancakes, and freshly baked bread. Lunch and dinner are three-course meals featuring both international and Ugandan dishes — such as grilled tilapia, roasted chicken, and tasty vegetarian options.

Guests can dine indoors by the large open fireplace or outside on the terrace overlooking the crater lake.

The bar and lounge are cozy places to relax with a drink after a day of exploring. You can also enjoy board games, read books, or simply take in the sunset views from the balcony.

The lodge has a large swimming pool set in the gardens below, surrounded by wooden decking and sun loungers — a perfect spot for cooling off in the afternoon.

There is also a tennis court, croquet lawn, and wellness centre offering massages and relaxation treatments. The gardens are full of fruit trees and colorful flowers, adding to the natural beauty of the place.
