If you are looking for a break from the noise, traffic, and busy pace of Kampala, Sipi Falls is the perfect antidote to city life.
Just a six-hour drive from the capital, Sipi offers cool air, green hills, and the relaxing sound of waterfalls — a peaceful escape that feels like a whole new world. Sipi Falls is made up of three beautiful waterfalls and is located in eastern Uganda in the Kapchorwa district, northeast of Mbale. The falls lie on the edge of Mount Elgon National Park on the border with Kenya.
The Sipi Falls and the Sipi River are named after the ‘Sep’, a native plant found along the riverbanks. This medicinal plant is used by locals to treat measles and influenza. The area is characterized by coffee plantations, streams, waterfalls, chameleons, wild vegetation, traditional African villages, and stunning views of the Karamoja Plains.
At 1,775 meters above sea level, the weather is pleasantly cool during the day — perfect for hiking, relaxing with a book, or enjoying a cup of fresh coffee with amazing views. Sipi is also a great place to start or end a journey through Uganda’s lesser-visited eastern region. You can combine it with the adventure-filled town of Jinja, the open plains of Pian Upe, the rich culture of Karamoja, or the raw, untouched beauty of Kidepo Valley National Park.
